Layer Height Calculator
Pick the right layer height for speed vs quality.
Enter nozzle size and quality target. Get min/max safe heights, a recommended range, and a rough time impact estimate.
Guideline: min layer ≈ 0.25× nozzle, max ≈ 0.8× nozzle. Recommended depends on your quality target.
How it’s calculated
- Min layer ≈ 0.25× nozzle (adhesion and extrusion stability).
- Max layer ≈ 0.8× nozzle (beyond this, poor bonding/surface quality).
- Recommended range shifts by quality target: high quality skews lower, draft skews higher.
- Perimeters per mm ≈ 1 ÷ layer height; used for a rough time delta estimate vs balanced preset.
Examples
- 0.4 mm nozzle, balanced → ~0.16–0.24 mm (min 0.10, max 0.32).
- 0.6 mm nozzle, quality → ~0.20–0.32 mm (min 0.15, max 0.48).
- 0.4 mm nozzle, draft → ~0.20–0.28 mm (min 0.10, max 0.32).

FAQ
Can I exceed 0.8× nozzle?
It’s not recommended—layer adhesion and surface quality suffer. Keep max ≈ 0.75–0.8× for reliable prints.
What about resin/SLA?
This calculator is FDM-oriented. Resin layer heights follow different constraints; we’ll add a resin preset later.
